Kite flying industry in doldrums due to govt’s indecision over Basant

The kite flying industry has faced a loss of crores of rupees due to government’s indecision.

Lahore (Pakistan Point News – 8th January, 2019) The Punjab government has taken a U-turn over its decision to celebrate Basant.

The kite flying industry has faced a loss of crores of rupees due to government’s indecision.

Just as the Punjab government announced celebrating Basant in Lahore, the citizens were all excited while the kite flying industry had started making preparations for the festival.

However, following the criticism on the decision, the Punjab government had to take a U-turn.

Moreover, the provincial government has launched a crackdown against kite flyers.

The citizens are of the view that Basant can be celebrated by taking precautionary measures as placing a safety rod in front of bikes and thinning the thread used to fly kites.

The Punjab government had earlier announced to allow celebrating Basant in Lahore in February.

Punjab Information Minister Fayyaz ul Hassan Chohan gave this good news to the citizens of Lahore. The minister said that Basant will be celebrated in Lahore in the second week of February. The Lahoris will celebrate their historic festival after a gap of ten years.

Basant is a social and cultural event which was enriched in the cultural history of the subcontinent. Basant creates enormous economic activity and is a source of promoting tourism. The decision had already got the Lahoris excited.

However, the protection of human life is an important aspect to ponder for the government before allowing Basant festivities.

The Punjab government’s decision to celebrate Basant has been challenged in the Lahore High Court (LHC). Safdar Shaheen Advocate filed a petition in the LHC against Punjab government’s decision to celebrate Basant.

The petitioner adopted that Basant has become a bloody festival, causing grave loss of human lives. Therefore, the bloody festival should not be supported again and Punjab government be barred from celebrating it.

Taking some preventive measures, the vibrant festival can be revived in Lahore.
