LHC issues notice to Punjab govt over its announcement to celebrate Basant

The court has issued a notice to Punjab government to submit a clause-wise reply over its announcement to celebrate Basant.

Islamabad (Pakistan Point News – 21st December, 2018) The Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued a notice to Punjab government over its announcement to celebrate Basant in Lahore.

According to details, LHC judge Justice Amin-ud-din Khan held the hearing on Safdar Shaheen’s petition on Friday.

The court has issued a notice to Punjab government to submit a clause-wise reply over its announcement to celebrate Basant.

Rejecting the request for stay order to celebrate Basant, the court issued notice to the Punjab government for December 26.

A petition was filed in the LHC challenging the Punjab government's decision of lifting ban on celebrating basant festival.

The petition was filed by Advocate Safdar Shaheen Pirzada submitting that a ban was imposed on celebrating basant festival after it turned into a blood sport.

He further submitted that it was unconstitutional to allow such an activity that results in the loss of human lives. He pleaded with the court to set aside the decision being illegal.

Justice Atir Mahmood of the LHC had on Thursday refused to hear a petition and referred the matter to LHC chief justice with a request to fix it before another bench.

Punjab Information and Culture Minister Fayyazul Hassan Chohan announced the government's decision to lift ban on Basant festival on December 18. He said that a committee would be constituted to deliberate over negative aspects of the festival and suggest steps to avoid them.
