If PM can b disqualified for misstatement, why not House disruptors, PA speaker asks

Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan says Supreme Court decision that led to Nawaz Sharif’s disqualification was not a just verdict

LAHORE: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-July 7th, 2025) Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan on Monday strongly criticized disruptive elements in the assembly, questioning why those responsible for turning the House into a spectacle cannot be disqualified when a Prime Minister can be removed from office for misstatement.

Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan indirectly criticized Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), saying, “Your political party has promoted hooliganism, which has been evident on the streets.”

He gave these remarks while adressing a press conference in Lahore on Monday.

He further remarked, “People have been hanged, mothers and wives have carried the coffins of their loved ones—will the assemblies now testify to such tragedies? That is my question. If a parliamentary party refuses to sit and resolve matters, Article 63(2) will come into effect.”

Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan emphasized the distinction between conduct before and after entering the Assembly, expressing his respect for parliamentary traditions and speech.

“Do you think hurling abuse is your only skill? The Supreme Court decision that led to Nawaz Sharif’s disqualification was not a just verdict,” he stated.

Referring to the Panama papers case, he noted, “It is clearly written that if members violate their oath, the Speaker shall send a reference to the Election Commission for disqualification.” He added that the culture of political thuggery must end, saying, “This practice must be curbed after 35 years. I will make a decision within 30 days.”

Highlighting the importance of democratic discourse, the speaker said, “The beauty of Parliament lies in dialogue. I urge both the government and opposition to respect the dignity of words. politics is about discussion not violence or bloodshed.”

“If a prime minister can be disqualified over a false statement, why can’t those who make a mockery of the House face the same consequences?,” he reiterated his question.
