Pakistan will wage war if India violates Indus Waters Treaty, warns Bilawal

PPP chairman criticizes PM Modi, calls a cheap copy of Netanyahu in this region

ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-June 23rd, 2025) Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Monday issued a strong warning to India over violations of the Indus Waters Treaty, saying that if India does not adhere to the agreement and proceeds with building dams or canals, Pakistan will go to war.

Speaking during a session in the National Assembly, Bilawal criticized Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi without naming him, stating, “There is a cheap copy of Netanyahu in our region. We have defeated India on the battlefield, through diplomacy, and in narrative.”

Bilawal emphasized that Pakistan is also fighting for the benefit of Indian citizens, arguing that peace between the two nations serves the interests of both populations. “India wants our future generations to fight over water,” he said, adding that India's threats to cut off Pakistan’s water are a violation of the UN Charter.

He outlined two options for India: either honor the Indus Waters Treaty, or face the consequences. “If India violates the treaty and builds dams or canals unilaterally, Pakistan will wage war, and we will ensure that water from all six rivers flows into Pakistan,” he declared.

On the Kashmir issue, Bilawal said the international narrative has shifted. “Even the US President has spoken about mediation. India is no longer able to hide behind the claim that Kashmir is an internal matter. The world now sees Kashmir as an international dispute — and that is a diplomatic victory for Pakistan,”.

Discussing the Federal budget, the PPP chairman expressed conditional support while appreciating the government’s decision to engage his party in the budget-making process. He thanked the prime minister, finance minister and foreign minister but noted that PPP’s key demands were not fully met.

He said, “We supported the increase in salaries and pensions, though we wanted a more significant raise,”. He also voiced disappointment that South Punjab was not allocated 30% of Punjab’s development budget and called for greater federal support for Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa through Public Sector Development Programs (PSDP).

He added that the finance minister had assured future cooperation on these concerns in the next budget cycle.
