PML-Q says they will consult the party leaders while the JI has condemned the move of the government to ban the PTI.
LAHORE: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-July 15th, 2024) Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) top leadership convened to assess the political situation in the country, particularly focusing on the proposed ban on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and other strategic alternatives, said the sources on Monday.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with his elder brother and PML-N President Nawaz Sharif for the third time this week, underscoring the critical nature of the political climate. Nawaz advised Shehbaz to consider all available legal, constitutional, and political avenues.
During their discussion, the Prime Minister briefed Nawaz on his outreach to President Asif Zardari and other coalition partners, with Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also present at their Changla Gali residence. The meeting centered on the overall political landscape, including tactics for enforcing the PTI ban and other related measures.
All decisions reached during these consultations were communicated to senior party members. It was also determined that a Federal cabinet meeting would take place after Muharram, and a parliamentary session would be scheduled prior to the regular timetable.
In contrast, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has refrained from publicly commenting on the PTI ban.
In a related development, the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), a key ally of the ruling coalition, expressed that they were not consulted regarding the decision to impose a ban on PTI. Party insiders indicated they were unaware of this move as well as the treason cases against PTI founder Imran Khan and former President Arif Alvi. They plan to hold a meeting to further discuss the issue.
Jamaat-e-Islami’s acting Emir, Liaqat Baloch, criticized the government's decision, calling it nonsensical and a form of unethical politics. He cautioned about the repercussions of this anti-democratic action.
Baloch accused the ruling party of acting in the interests of the establishment to cling to power and urged political leaders to come together to resolve ongoing crises. He stressed the importance of restoring the people's mandate based on Form 45 to address current political and economic issues.
Accompanied by JI Secretary General Amirul Azim and Information Secretary Qaisar Sharif, Baloch also condemned the prosecution of political figures under Article 6 of the Constitution, arguing that a government formed through questionable means lacks the authority to make pivotal decisions.
While acknowledging the government's constitutional rights to challenge the Supreme Court's rulings on reserved seats, he maintained that it lacks the moral authority to obstruct elected members from joining their respective parties. Furthermore, he denounced the government's authorization for intelligence agencies to monitor citizens' communications, deeming it an invasion of privacy and unconstitutional.
