Number game in National Assembly after SC verdict in SIC reserved seat case

After securing 23 reserved seats, PTI could potentially increase its tally in the National Assembly to 109 members.

ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-July 12nd, 2024) After the Supreme Court's decision to allocate reserved seats to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the National Assembly faced a highly intriguing situation of number games.

With the possibility of securing reserved seats, PTI could become the largest group in the National Assembly.

After securing 23 reserved seats, PTI could potentially increase its tally in the National Assembly to 109 members. However, despite these reserved seats, the ruling alliance of Muslim League-N is expected to maintain superiority.

The ruling alliance, with 209 members, holds a simple majority in the House. However, if PTI secures reserved seats, the opposition alliance could consist of 120 members.

Currently, the National Assembly opposition including PTI, totals 97 members, with PTI having 86 members in the House and 84 in the Senate. Barrister Gohar and Omar Ayub are two independent hopefuls.

In the opposition alliance, there are 8 seats for JUI-F, 1 for BNP-M, 1 for MQM, and 1 for PKMAP. If PTI secures all reserved seats, its total could reach 109, making the opposition alliance consist of 120 members.

Six other independent candidates hold seats in the National Assembly.

The ruling alliance in the National Assembly comprises 209 members, including 108 from Muslim League-N and 68 from People's Party.

Besides it, the MQM had 21 members while one minority seat is vacant.

In the National Assembly, Pakistan Muslim League has 5 seats, PPP has 4 seats, Muslim League Zia has 1 seat, Balochistan Awami Party has 1 seat, and National Party has 1 seat.
