Former Sindh assembly speaker Agha Siraj Durrani passes away

Veteran PPP leader Agha Siraj Durrani died after a month-long illness following a brain hemorrhage. National leaders paid tribute to his decades of political and democratic service.

KARACHI: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-Oct,15, 2025) Senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and former long-serving Speaker of the Sindh Assembly, Agha Siraj Durrani, passed away after a prolonged illness.

According to family sources, Agha Siraj Durrani had suffered a brain hemorrhage about a month ago and had been under treatment at a local hospital. His condition deteriorated again in recent days, and doctors confirmed his death today.

The Presidency expressed deep sorrow over his passing, paying tribute to his decades-long political and democratic services for Sindh and Pakistan.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also offered condolences, praying for the departed soul and patience for the bereaved family. He said Agha Siraj Durrani rendered valuable services as Speaker of the Sindh Assembly and would be remembered for his dedication to public welfare and democracy.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah expressed profound grief, describing Durrani as a loyal, principled, and devoted leader of the PPP who played a key role in strengthening the Sindh Assembly and promoting democracy. He said Durrani’s contributions will always be remembered.

Agha Siraj Durrani served as Speaker of the Sindh Assembly from May 31, 2013, to May 25, 2024, and also held the position of acting Governor of Sindh from March to October 2022.

Affiliated with the PPP for over four decades, he was first elected to the Sindh Assembly in 1988, served three terms as a provincial minister, and twice as Speaker. He was considered a trusted associate of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and Asif Ali Zardari.
