ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-July 9, 2024) The Federal government granted the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency the authority to intercept and trace communications in matters concerning national security, the sources close to the development said on Tuesday.
This decision, reached during a recent federal cabinet meeting, involves the implementation of Section 54 of the Telecommunication (Re-organization) Act 1996.
This section allowed the designated ISI officers of at least grade 18 to undertake these activities.
The government also issued a notification affirming its commitment to safeguard national security and prevent offenses by periodically authorizing ISI officers to intercept calls and trace messages through communication systems.
This move, permitted under the Telecommunications Act, is aimed at bolstering national defense and security against foreign threats.
