New Honduran Migrant Caravan Expected To Begin Journey This Week - Advocacy Group Leader

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 15th January, 2019) A new migrant caravan that is reportedly forming in Honduras is expected to begin its journey towards the United States this week, Pueblo Sin Fronteras Director Irineo Mujica told Sputnik.

"Yes," Mujica said on Monday when asked if the caravan is expected to form and head towards the United States this week. "We expect something will happen but we don't know how or how many. We are not in organizing or even close by, but our years of experience in the field is where we base our opinion."

Earlier on Monday, CNN reported that a caravan is expected to leave the Honduran city of San Pedro Sula at 12:00 p.m. GMT on Tuesday. According to media reports, the caravan is supposed to number up to 15,000 migrants.

Mujica pointed out that during this time of year a lot of migrants head north.

US President Donald Trump told reporters during a visit to the border in the Texas city of McAllen on Thursday that the United States will be prepared to handle the massive caravan.

The new caravan is much larger than the previous caravans that made the trip through Mexico last October.

According to different estimates, there are about 6,000 to 9,000 migrants from Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador staying in the Mexican cities of Tijuana and Mexicali.

The US Federal government shut down on December 22 after the US Senate failed to pass a spending bill that includes Trump's $5.7 billion request for a border wall. Democrat Congressional leaders and Trump have been unable to reach a compromise on a spending bill because of the dispute over the border wall funding.
