Iran's supreme leader vows revenge as tensions with US escalate

Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei says Iran remained committed to seeking justice for those killed in the recent conflict

TEHRAN: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-July 11th, 2026) Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei has vowed to avenge the killing of his father and predecessor, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, declaring that retaliation is "the demand of the nation."

In a written message released on Saturday during funeral ceremonies held in memory of the late leader, Khamenei said Iran remained committed to seeking justice for those killed in the recent conflict.

"We pledge to avenge the blood of the martyred leader and all those who lost their lives in the two wars," he said, adding that those responsible would be held accountable.

Meanwhile, Iran's Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei said the country's legal institutions would pursue international legal action against the United States and Israel over what he described as war crimes committed during the conflict.

Addressing a gathering of Iranian judicial officials and international legal experts in Tehran, Ejei said Iran was determined to document the alleged violations and seek accountability through international legal forums.

He said the Attorney General's Office and the judiciary's international affairs departments were preparing legal cases aimed at prosecuting those responsible and securing compensation for damages suffered by Iran.

The latest statements come amid renewed tensions between Tehran and Washington following a warning issued by US President Donald Trump.

On Friday, Trump said the United States had "1,000 missiles locked and loaded" and threatened a massive military response if Iran attempted to assassinate him. In a message posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump claimed additional missiles were ready for launch and said the US military had already been instructed to respond decisively to any such attack.

The exchange of strong rhetoric follows weeks of heightened tensions despite ongoing diplomatic contacts between the two countries. Earlier this year, Iran and the United States signed an Islamabad-mediated memorandum of understanding aimed at ending hostilities and promoting a lasting peace agreement.

However, the fragile understanding has come under strain after both sides accused each other of violating its provisions. Recent military exchanges involving US strikes on Iranian targets and Iranian retaliatory attacks against US assets have further heightened concerns over regional stability.

The latest statements from both Tehran and Washington underscore the continuing volatility in relations between the two countries, even as diplomatic efforts to prevent a wider conflict remain ongoing.
