The FIA officials say the specialised unit has been created on the instructions of the agency’s Director General to improve the investigation of crimes linked to cryptocurrencies and enhance the country’s capacity to address emerging digital financial threats
ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-July 21st, 2026) The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has launched a Special Cryptocurrency Investigation Unit aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s response to financial crimes involving virtual assets, including money laundering, terrorist financing and cyber fraud.
The FIA officials said that the specialised unit has been created on the instructions of the agency’s Director General to improve the investigation of crimes linked to cryptocurrencies and enhance the country’s capacity to address emerging digital financial threats.
The unit will focus on probing offences such as money laundering, financing of terrorism, cryptocurrency-related scams and other cyber-enabled financial crimes. It will also monitor suspicious crypto transactions and identify attempts to exploit digital currencies for unlawful purposes.
The officials said investigators will use advanced forensic tools, blockchain analysis and internationally accepted investigative techniques to trace illicit transactions, collect digital evidence and dismantle criminal networks operating through virtual assets.
The FIA said the initiative is designed to strengthen law enforcement capabilities in response to the rapid growth of cryptocurrency-related financial activity and the increasingly sophisticated methods used by cybercriminals.
The local authorities added that the new unit will play a key role in preventing the misuse of digital currencies while ensuring legal action against individuals and organisations involved in illegal financial operations.
The establishment of the specialised unit forms part of the FIA’s broader efforts to modernise its investigative framework, enhance oversight of Pakistan’s expanding digital financial landscape and improve coordination in cases involving virtual assets.
The officials expressed confidence that the new unit will contribute to more effective enforcement against cyber-enabled financial crimes and help strengthen the country’s overall anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing framework.
