Iran claims strike on US operations centre in Syria as regional tensions escalate

IRGC says attack was carried out during the 11th wave of “Operation Nasr 2”, describing it as retaliation for the deaths of Iranian military personnel in the Bampur area of Iranshahr

TEHRAN: (UrduPoint /Pakistan Point News-July 17th, 2026) Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed it targeted a US military Special Operations Command centre in Syria’s al-Tanf region as part of the latest phase of its retaliatory campaign against recent American strikes.

In a statement, the IRGC said the attack was carried out during the 11th wave of “Operation Nasr 2”, describing it as retaliation for the deaths of Iranian military personnel in the Bampur area of Iranshahr.

The IRGC claimed the strike destroyed a radar system, hit several helicopters used for special operations and killed a large number of US military personnel.

The Iranian force also asserted that it continues to maintain full control over the Strait of Hormuz, warning that no oil or gas exports would be allowed to pass through the strategic waterway as long as US military operations against Iran continue.

The United States has not confirmed the Iranian claims regarding casualties or damage at the al-Tanf base.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for US Central Command (CENTCOM) said recent Iranian attacks in the Gulf region had not affected US military operations or combat readiness.

The spokesperson said around 50,000 US troops remain deployed across the middle East and are fully prepared to carry out any mission if required.

CENTCOM also accused Iran of launching indiscriminate attacks against neighbouring countries, saying such actions endanger civilian lives and threaten regional stability.

The claims made by both sides could not be independently verified, and the military confrontation between the United States and Iran continues to intensify.
