Pope Calls to Protect Life as Vegetative Frenchman Switched Off Life Support

Pope Francis said Monday life should be protected until its natural end after doctors in France began turning off life support of a man who has been in a vegetative state for a decade

ROME (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th May, 2019) Pope Francis said Monday life should be protected until its natural end after doctors in France began turning off life support of a man who has been in a vegetative state for a decade.

"Let us pray for those who live with a serious handicap. Let us always protect life, a God's gift, from its beginning to the natural end. Do not give in to the throwaway culture," he tweeted.

Controversy has surrounded the case of Vincent Lambert, who has been unresponsive since a motorbike accident in 2008. His wife and several siblings have asked the hospital in Reims to end his suffering.

Euthanasia is illegal in France but doctors can withdraw essential care. The European Court of Human Rights in 2015 upheld a decision by a local court to take him off life support despite protests by his other relatives, including Lambert's parents, who are devoted Catholics.
