Let us always protect life, a God's gift, from its beginning to the natural end. Do not give in to the throwaway culture," he tweeted.
Controversy has surrounded the case of Vincent Lambert, who has been unresponsive since a motorbike accident in 2008. His wife and several siblings have asked the hospital in Reims to end his suffering.
Euthanasia is illegal in France but doctors can withdraw essential care. The European Court of Human Rights in 2015 upheld a decision by a local court to take him off life support despite protests by his other relatives, including Lambert's parents, who are devoted Catholics.
