Cholera Vaccine Campaign Begins in Mozambique Capital in Cyclone Idai Aftermath - WHO

The distribution of nearly 900,000 oral cholera vaccines began on Wednesday in Mozambique's capital in the aftermath of flooding left by Cyclone Idai, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in a press release

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 03rd April, 2019) The distribution of nearly 900,000 oral cholera vaccines began on Wednesday in Mozambique's capital in the aftermath of flooding left by Cyclone Idai, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in a press release.

A vaccination campaign carried out by Mozambique's Ministry of Health, takes place after almost 1,500 cases of cholera, including one death, were reported following severe floods in Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Madagascar caused by Cyclone Idai.

"An oral cholera vaccination campaign to protect survivors of Cyclone Idai begins today in Beira, Mozambique," the press release read.

According to the WHO, 884,953 doses of oral cholera vaccines arrived in Mozambique on Tuesday. The organization will work with Mozambique to coordinate the vaccination campaign through providing logistical support and ensuring apt cold chain storage.

Cyclone Idai caused landfall in Mozambique in mid-March, bringing torrential rains and ghastly winds, before heading west to ravage neighboring Zimbabwe and Malawi. Recent media reports indicate that over 700 people across the three countries have been killed due to the cyclone, with many more left injured or homeless.
