US National Weather Service Says Might Have Detected Meteor Crashed In W. Cuba - Statement

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 02nd February, 2019) The US National Weather Service said its radar located in the city of Key West, Florida, might have detected the apparent meteor that subsequently landed in western Cuba.

"@NWSKeyWest radar may have detected the meteor that affected western Cuba earlier today ... A signature was detected near Vinales, Cuba, at a height of over 26,000 ft above ground level," the agency wrote on Twitter on Friday.

Earlier in the day, the Prensa Latina news agency reported, citing Osmany Mosegui, the deputy chair of the administrative council of the Vinales municipality in the Pinar Del Rio province, that very loud sounds were heard in the neighborhood at around 01:00 p.m. (20:00 GMT) on Friday.

Eyewitnesses, cited by other media, said that had heard a loud explosion and seen fire and smoke in the area.

Specialists have reportedly recovered several fragments of the meteor.
