Sudanese police fired tear gas at hundreds of worshipers who took to the streets of Khartoum after Friday prayers to protest hikes in bread price, media reported.

The African desert country has been rocked by anti-government demonstrations for more than a week, with thousands showing their discontent with soaring bread prices and general economic hardship.

Witnesses said protesters in Khartoum, the Sudanese capital, were chanting slogans against the government of President Omar Bashir, according to the Turkish Anadolu news agency. Security forces had to use tear gas to disperse protesters.

Rallies were also reportedly held in the cities of Atbara, Dinder and Port Sudan. Information Minister Bushara Juma said Thursday that 19 people, including two security personnel, had died in clashes since the beginning of protests.
