NEW YORK (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th December, 2018) The United States lacks strategy with respect to Syria raising the question about how it plans to defeat the Islamic State terror group (banned in Russia), US Congressman Eliot Engel said in a statement on Wednesday in response to reports that the Trump administration decided to withdraw all US troops from the country in 60-100 days.
"The White House hasn't come close to presenting a comprehensive strategy for grappling with this problem [security concerns regarding Syria]," Engel said on Wednesday. "This precipitous withdrawal leaves scores of unanswered questions, most pressingly about how the administration plans to ensure the defeat of ISIS [Islamic State]."
Engel claimed the Trump administration's move to withdraw US troops from Syria will benefit America's adversaries - in particular Russia and Iran - that are trying to gain greater influence in the region.
President Donald Trump should consult with Congress to confirm that the United States uses military force in accordance with the War Powers Resolution, Engels added.
Earlier on Wednesday, Trump decided to withdraw the estimated 2,000 US forces deployed in Syria because the Primary goal of defeating the Islamic State has been accomplished, according to media reports.
Eliot Engel, a Democrat from New York, is Ranking Member of the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee.
