Mexican President Creates Commission To Investigate 2014 Mass Kidnapping Of Students

MEXICO CITY (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th December, 2018) New Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Monday that he signed a decree to create a special commission to investigate the mass kidnapping of students in 2014.

In September 2014, 43 students disappeared in the city of Iguala. Later it turned out that the students were kidnapped by local police officers and given to criminals, who reportedly killed the students and burnt their bodies. As part of the investigation more than 100 people were arrested, including the former mayor of Iguala and many senior police officers. However, the students' relatives are not satisfied with the results of the investigation.

"The commission is being created in order to create all the opportunities for the investigation. The Public Prosecutor's Office will be responsible for the investigation. We will closely monitor the results [of the investigation], we will not wash our hands. We respect the autonomy of other branches of power, but that is a matter of the state, which is very important for the Mexican citizens," the president said.

Obrador, who was inaugurated as the new Mexican president on Saturday, promised to launch a new investigation into the 2014 mass kidnapping of students during his election campaign. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said that there were serious procedural violations during the early stages of the investigation, including tortures and illegal detentions, that were hidden by the country's authorities.
