Earlier in the day, media reported that a man attacked a group of people with a knife after a car burst into flames on Bourke Street. The police said that the attacker had been arrested.
"Three people had been stabbed. Unfortunately, one is deceased at the scene. Two other victims are currently at hospital," the police spokesman told a press conference, aired by the 9News broadcaster.
According to the spokesman, the suspect threatened the police officers with a knife when they arrived. He was eventually shot by the police and taken to a hospital.
"The police shot the male in the chest and he is now in a critical condition under guard at hospital," the spokesman said.
The spokesman noted that the police had received the information about the burning car at Bourke Street at around 4:30 p.m. local time (05:30 GMT). The police are not searching for any other perpetrators at the moment, the spokesman added.
