UPDATE - Death Toll In Taiwan Train Crash Down To 18

BEIJING (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 21st October, 2018) Taiwan's government has lowered the death toll from Sunday's train crash to 18, after the railways administration said 22 lives were lost.

The railway authority also said earlier 171 people had been injured when an express train derailed in the afternoon in the northeastern Yilan county.

The current number of those injured stands at 168, the government said in a statement, admitting errors in calculations. Ten people are in critical condition.

The Puyuma Express carrying 366 passengers was on the way to Taitung when it went off the tracks. Five carriages overturned. The cause of the wreck is being investigated.

Authorities have described the train crash as the worst railway disaster in Taiwan in almost four decades. Thirty people died after a passenger train rammed a truck in 1981.
