Death Toll In Taiwan Train Crash Up To 22 - Authorities

BEIJING (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 21st October, 2018) The death toll from a train crash in Taiwan has risen to 22, with 171 people being injured, the railways administration said Sunday.

Earlier reports suggested 17 people died and 101 were injured.

"As of 9:30 p.m. [13:30GMT], 22 deaths have been confirmed, 171 people are known to have received different injuries," the authority said in a statement.

A Puyuma Express with 366 passengers was going to Taitung when it went off the tracks in the afternoon in the northeastern Yilan county. At least one injured is reported to be a US citizen.

Five carriages overturned. The cause of the wreck is being investigated. A major emergency response operation is underway.

Authorities have described the train crash as the worst railway disaster in Taiwan in almost four decades. Thirty people died after a passenger train rammed a truck in 1981.
