Supporters of Catalonia's secession from Spain blocked high-speed railway traffic between Catalonia and France on Monday as part of a protest to celebrate the first anniversary of the region's independence referendum, Committees for the Defense of the Republic (CDR) wrote on Twitter.

MADRID (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st October, 2018) Supporters of Catalonia's secession from Spain blocked high-speed railway traffic between Catalonia and France on Monday as part of a protest to celebrate the first anniversary of the region's independence referendum, Committees for the Defense of the Republic (CDR) wrote on Twitter.

The CDR, which is a network of local, regional and national-level pro-Catalan independence assemblies, posted a photo of blocked railways in the northeastern Catalan city of Girona.

"TAV [Treno Alta Velocita, high-speed trains] do not operate today. Communication with France has been blocked," CDR's Twitter post read.

The CDR have also blocked the AP-7 motorway in the municipality of Vandellos i l'Hospitalet de l'Infant, which leads to the French border, as well as several streets in Barcelona and Lleida.

The independence referendum, held on October 1, 2017, resulted in over 90 percent of voters supporting Catalonia's secession. On October 27, the Catalan government proclaimed the region's independence, but the central Spanish government refused to accept the results of the referendum and imposed direct governance over the region. Several pro-independence Catalan politicians were jailed, while Carles Puigdemont, the former Catalan president, fled to Brussels to avoid sedition charges.
