Raids in several areas of the North Zone of the city involved more than 4,000 security forces. The situation was particularly tense in Pena district, where eight people were killed and intense shooting was heard, according to the Globo broadcaster.
In the municipality of Niteroi, six suspected criminals were reportedly killed by the police after a chase and shootout.
