NEW DELHI: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-July 24th, 2026) Social activist Sonam Wangchuk has ended his 26-day hunger strike after the Indian government assured him that no legal action would be taken against protesters demonstrating at Jantar Mantar, according to Indian media reports.
The decision came after India’s Ministers of State and the Health Minister visited Wangchuk in hospital and conveyed the government’s assurances.
Reacting to the development, Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janata Party, welcomed Wangchuk’s decision, saying he was relieved that the activist had ended his fast after nearly four weeks.
However, Dipke said the group’s peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar would continue until Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigns.
Large-scale demonstrations have continued across New Delhi in recent days. Earlier this week, several protesters and police personnel were injured after clashes erupted during a march towards Parliament, where police launched a crackdown to stop demonstrators from advancing.
Cockroach Janata Party has emerged as one of India’s most prominent youth-led protest movements and is widely seen as a symbol of public dissent against the government.
The movement began in May as a satirical online campaign against alleged irregularities and question paper leaks in higher education entrance examinations. It later gained widespread support on social media and evolved into a nationwide protest.
The protesters, who refer to themselves as “Cockroaches,” have been demonstrating for more than a month, with some participants observing hunger strikes.
The movement is demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, arguing that he should accept moral responsibility for the alleged leak of the national medical entrance examination paper that disrupted the aspirations of thousands of students.
