Petrol, diesel prices likely to rise as global oil costs surge

The anticipated increase comes after a sharp rise in international crude oil prices, driven by escalating tensions between Iran and the United States, which have pushed global energy prices higher

ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-July 17th, 2026) Federal government is expected to increase petrol and diesel prices in the latest fortnightly fuel price review, raising concerns about additional financial pressure on consumers.

The anticipated increase comes after a sharp rise in international crude oil prices, driven by escalating tensions between Iran and the United States, which have pushed global energy prices higher.

According to estimates, the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) could increase by up to Rs40 per litre, while petrol may become around Rs10 per litre more expensive under the revised prices expected to take effect from July 18.

Media reports suggest the government is also considering reducing the petroleum levy to soften the impact of the proposed increase and provide partial relief to consumers.

Meanwhile, the authorities have decided to intensify action against the hoarding of petroleum products to prevent artificial shortages and profiteering.

The National Committee on Monitoring and Coordination has taken notice of reports that some market participants are stockpiling fuel in anticipation of higher prices. The committee has directed the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) to initiate immediate legal action against those involved in hoarding.

The officials have also instructed relevant departments to ensure the uninterrupted supply of petroleum products across the country to avoid any disruption in the market.

Economic experts say fluctuations in global oil prices, particularly those triggered by geopolitical tensions, continue to pose a major challenge for oil-importing countries such as Pakistan.

They stress that while action against hoarding is essential, long-term energy security will require greater investment in alternative energy sources and strategies to reduce the country’s dependence on imported fuel.
