MUMBAI: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-July 30th, 2025) Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor's former husband and Indian billionaire businessman Sanjay Kapur passed away suddenly, bringing his multi-billion rupee estate into the media spotlight.
The Indian media reported that at the time of his death, Sanjay Kapur owned assets worth over INR 30,000 crore. A significant portion of this wealth is linked to the Sona Group, a major business enterprise.
Family dispute over Sona group shares
Sanjay’s mother, Rani Kapur, has claimed that a majority of shares in the Sona Group are under her name. She alleged that certain individuals are trying to take control of the family’s assets. Despite these attempts, she maintains that no official representative has been appointed by her for the group.
Controversially, during an annual board meeting held without Rani Kapur’s consent, Sanjay’s current wife Priya Sachdev Kapur was appointed as a non-executive director. Rani also claimed that her bank accounts have been frozen, putting her under severe financial strain.
Cause of death
Sanjay Kapur died of a heart attack in June while participating in a polo match in the UK. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he could not be revived.
Karisma Kapoor’s alleged claim
Reports suggest that Karisma Kapoor may also be seeking a share in Sanjay’s estate. However, neither she nor her legal team has released an official statement so far. Some sources claim Karisma has no legal stake in his assets, though her two children with Sanjay are considered rightful heirs and are expected to receive their share.
Marriages, legal battles
Sanjay Kapur was first married to fashion designer Nandita Mahtani in 1996, but the marriage ended in 2000. He then married Karisma Kapoor in 2003, and the couple had two children. After a lengthy legal battle, they divorced in 2016, with Karisma gaining custody of the children, who now live with her in Mumbai.
A year after his divorce from Karisma, Sanjay married model Priya Sachdev, marking his third marriage.
As the inheritance dispute intensifies, the battle over Sanjay Kapur’s legacy is expected to unfold both legally and publicly in the coming weeks.
