Has Waqar Younis authority to appoint Pakistan team captain?

Interesting development emerges after appointment of Waqar Younis as advisor to Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Mohsin Naqvi.

LAHORE: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-August 1st, 2024) Former captain Waqar Younis has taken on a significant position within the Pakistan Cricket board (PCB) with extensive powers, although the decision regarding the captaincy will be made by the Chairman.

The sources said that Waqar Younis, who is a consultant to PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, was given the mandate to manage all cricket-related affairs in Pakistan. However, the authority to appoint the captain would remain with the Chairman, they added.

The PCB consultant would handle cricket-related matters, while the coach would submit recommendations to Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who will finalize the captain's appointment.

The reports showed that head coaches for white-ball cricket, Gary Kirsten and Test cricket Jason Gillespie would make recommendations regarding the captaincy.

Shan Masood would continue to lead the Test team while Babar Azam’s future as the T20 captain remained uncertain following a poor performance in the T20 World Cup.

The speculation around surgery is now limited to Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq.

The Pakistani team is set to travel to Australia in November for One Day and T20 International series, with the decision on the white-ball format captain expected in October.

Some players expressed dissatisfaction with the team management, raising the possibility of disciplinary action. It is also unlikely that these players would be given opportunities in the upcoming series against Bangladesh.
