Brazilian President Vows to Deliver 'Objective' Speech on Amazon Fires at UNGA

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has said that he will deliver an "objective" speech on Amazon forest fires at the UN General Assembly session next week

RIO DE JANEIRO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th September, 2019) Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has said that he will deliver an "objective" speech on Amazon forest fires at the UN General Assembly session next week.

Fires have been ravaging the Amazon rainforest in Brazil and neighboring states, considered to be the lungs of the planet, for over a month, with the forest area affected already 82 percent greater compared to the previous year. Bolsonaro has been blamed for encouraging fires to free up the land for farming and mining.

"I will be in New York on Tuesday. I am preparing a fairly objective speech, which will differ from [the information provided by] other presidents," Bolsonaro said in a speech, broadcast on Facebook.

The wildfires in the Amazonian region have been in the global spotlight, especially after French President Emmanuel Macron suggested discussing the issue at the G7 summit in Biarritz.

Bolsonaro promptly hit back at Macron slamming him for his "colonialist mentality."

Macron, in turn, accused the Brazilian leader of failing to honor climate goals and threatened to block the long-awaited EU-Mercosur free trade deal.
