Death Toll In Carbon Dioxide Leak In Eastern China Rises To 10 People - Local Authorities

BEIJING (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th May, 2019) The number of people who died as a result of a carbon dioxide leak at a cargo ship in the eastern Chinese province of Shandong has climbed to 10, while another 19 people remain in hospitals, local authorities said.

The incident occurred at around 4:00 p.m. [08:00 GMT] local time on Saturday. The vessel was undergoing maintenance at the port of Longyan, when carbon dioxide leaked from a fire suppression system. The initial death toll stood at eight people.

The injured people suffered non-life threatening injuries and are in a stable condition, the authorities said.

An investigation into the incident was launched, with preliminary findings reportedly indicating that the leak could have been caused by the crew's negligence.
