Sri Lanka Terror Attacks 'Appalling' But Will Not Be Addressed At UNSC - Nebenzia

UNITED NATIONS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd April, 2019) Easter Sunday's deadly terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka are appalling, but the issue is not going to be raised at the UN Security Council, Russia's Ambassador to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia told Sputnik on Monday.

"I am not sure, to be honest, it is a terrible, terrible situation, but what is there to discuss?" Nebeniza said replying to whether the UN Security Council intends to address the attacks. "It is not that there is nothing to discuss, it is just everybody knows everything - a terrorist group committed a series of mass terrorist attacks, it is appalling, we condemn the attacks."

On Easter Sunday, Sri Lanka's Capital Colombo was hit by a series of coordinated bombings in churches and hotels that killed at least 290 people and left another 500 injured. On Monday, local media reported that another explosion took place near St. Anthony's church in the capital Colombo.

Colombo has launched a massive security operation in the wake of the tragedy. As of Monday, at least 24 people were detained in connection with the attacks. The authorities introduced and re-introduced curfews and deployed extra 1,000 troops in the capital.

On Monday, Interpol announced it would deploy a special team to Sri Lanka to investigate the waves of deadly bombings.
