Second Migrant Child Dies In US Immigration Custody Within Month - US Border Agency

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th December, 2018) The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said in a statement on Tuesday that the second migrant child died after being apprehended over an illegal entry attempt over the past month.

"An eight year-old Guatemalan national previously apprehended by U.S. Customs and Border Protection died shortly after midnight on December 25 at Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in Alamogordo, New Mexico ... The official cause of the child's death is not known. Consistent with CBP policy, CBP's Office of Professional Responsibility will conduct a review," the statement reads.

According to the statement, the boy showed signs of potential illness on December 24, and then was transferred to the medical center along with his father. The child was initially diagnosed by hospital staff with a common cold and released, however, same day in the evening he was transferred back to the hospital due to nausea and vomiting and passed away in a few hours.

On December 8, a seven year-old Guatemalan girl died two days after she was apprehended together with her father for illegal entry into the United States as part of a group of 163 undocumented immigrants. According to human rights activists, the girl died from a septic shock, fever heat and dehydration. The US authorities said that the girl had not eaten food and drunk water for several days.

The administration of US President Donald Trump has repeatedly been criticized for its "zero tolerance" policy of separating undocumented immigrants from their children.
