Russian Established Arctic Expedition Group on Basis of Kola Flotilla - Vice Admiral

An arctic expedition group was established on the basis of the Russian Northern Fleet's Kola Flotilla, Vice Admiral Oleg Golubev said Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 18th December, 2018) An arctic expedition group was established on the basis of the Russian Northern Fleet's Kola Flotilla, Vice Admiral Oleg Golubev said Tuesday.

"On the basis of the Kola Flotilla, an Arctic expedition group was created to perform work in the Arctic," Golubev told reporters during an extended meeting of the board of the Defense Ministry in Moscow on Tuesday.

The Kola Flotilla is based in the main military base in the city of Polyarny.

"The command unit of the Kola Flotilla is based there, as well as a brigade of ships to protect the water area and the oldest group of the Northern Fleet - a brigade of submarines," Golubev said.

The vice admiral also said that for more than two months the expedition group was operating in the waters of the Arctic and the Pacific oceans. The group included destroyer Vice Admiral Kulakov, ocean minesweeper Vladimir Gumanenko and landing ships Aleksandr Otrakovskiy and Kondopoga.

"During the long campaign the group was assisted by icebreaker Ilya Muromets, tanker Sergey Osipov, rescue tag Pamir, crane ship KIL-143 and multipurpose transport ship Elbrus," Golubev said.

According to the vice admiral, it was the first time when during one campaign a detachment of ships and vessels of the Northern Fleet made trans-arctic crossing twice in one navigation - from the Barents Sea to the Pacific Ocean and back.
