Russian Embassy in Bulgaria Condemns Desecration of Soviet Army Monument in Sofia

The Russian Embassy in Bulgaria condemned on Thursday the recent desecration of the Monument to the Soviet Army in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th October, 2018) The Russian Embassy in Bulgaria condemned on Thursday the recent desecration of the Monument to the Soviet Army in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia.

Unknown individuals damaged the monument during the night into Thursday by painting insulting inscriptions in Bulgarian on it.

"The Russian Embassy in Bulgaria voices its outermost indignation over a new act of desecration of the Monument to the Soviet Army that happened on the night between October 3 and October 4. It is deplorable that the monument designed to showcase gratitude to the soldiers who liberated Europe, and Bulgaria in particular, from fascism, who sacrificed their lives for the sake of our peaceful future, turns into a platform for some dubious political beliefs," the embassy wrote on Facebook.

The embassy recalled that Bulgaria was always respectful of history, since its earth was "soaked with Russian blood."

"The attempts to get it [Bulgaria] into a disgraceful war against monuments are very alarming. Such actions will not result in anything but tensions and lack of understanding between our countries, and we are sure that neither the Russian people nor the Bulgarian people are interested in this," the post read on.

This was not the first act of vandalism against military memorials in Bulgaria. For example, a monument commemorating Soviet soldiers who died in World War II was spray-painted with anti-Semitic, anti-Russian and anti-communist graffiti in the city of Plovdiv in November 2017. Monuments commemorating Soviet warriors have also been desecrated in Poland, Ukraine and Lithuania, among others.
