Berlin Welcomes Turkeys Decision to Lift German Journalist's Travel Ban - Spokesman

Berlin welcomes Ankara's decision to lift the travel ban on German journalist Mesale Tolu, who was arrested in Turkey on terrorism-related charges in April 2017, spokesman for the German government Steffen Seibert said on Monday.

BERLIN (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th August, 2018) Berlin welcomes Ankara's decision to lift the travel ban on German journalist Mesale Tolu, who was arrested in Turkey on terrorism-related charges in April 2017, spokesman for the German government Steffen Seibert said on Monday.

Earlier in the day, Tolu said the travel ban, imposed following her release from prison in December, had been lifted.

"[Germany welcomes] the decision to allow Ms. Tolu to leave Turkey," Seibert said at a briefing.

According to Tolu, her trial in Turkey will continue on October 16.

Several German nationals, including journalists Tolu, Deniz Yucel and human rights activist Peter Steudtner, were detained in Turkey on terrorist charges in 2017, amid a deterioration of ties between the two countries, sparked by Berlin's condemnation of Ankaras mass arrests in connection with the failed 2016 coup. German authorities have argued that the arrests were unlawful, and compromised Turkeys judiciary and security systems.

Steudtner and Yucel were released in October 2017 and February 2018, respectively.
