MUMBAI: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-July 27th, 2026) Anita Advani, who was in a long-term relationship with late Bollywood superstar Rajesh Khanna, has claimed that the actor repeatedly sought a divorce from his estranged wife Dimple Kapadia, but the marriage was never legally dissolved.
Speaking to Indian media, Advani alleged that Khanna asked Kapadia for a divorce on 10 occasions, but the separation was never formalised. She claimed that Kapadia had set conditions for granting a divorce, including the transfer of the actor’s assets.
Rajesh Khanna married Dimple Kapadia in 1973, when she was 16 years old. Although the couple separated in 1982 after the birth of their two daughters, they never obtained a legal divorce.
Advani remained in a relationship with Khanna for more than a decade before his death in 2012.
Her remarks come after the Bombay High Court in April this year dismissed her plea seeking legal recognition of her relationship with Khanna as a valid marriage. The court instead ruled that the relationship was in the nature of a live-in relationship, which did not fulfil the legal requirements of marriage under the Hindu Marriage Act.
Reacting to the court’s decision, Advani expressed disappointment, arguing that her case had been assessed under laws she believed were not applicable to her circumstances.
She further stated that when a spouse has permanently left the marital home and the relationship has effectively ended, another person who later becomes a companion should not be denied recognition. Advani also maintained that Rajesh Khanna had publicly acknowledged in past interviews that he had sought a divorce from Kapadia multiple times, claiming he made the request on 10 separate occasions but was unsuccessful.
Neither Rajesh Khanna nor Dimple Kapadia is alive or has publicly responded to these latest claims, and the allegations remain Advani’s account of the events.
