Sadaf Shamas’ World Cup snub raises questions

Despite scoring 447 runs in her last five ODIs, Sadaf Shamas was left out of Pakistan’s Women’s T20 World Cup squad.

KARACHI: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-June-06,2026) The Pakistan Women’s Cricket Team, led by Fatima Sana, is set to compete in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in England and Wales from June 12 to July 5, 2026.

Pakistan has been placed in Group One alongside arch-rivals India, as well as South Africa, Bangladesh, Australia and Netherlands.

However, the announcement of Pakistan’s 15-member squad has sparked debate among cricket observers, with particular attention focused on the omission of in-form batter Sadaf Shamas. Her exclusion comes after veteran batter Sidra Amin was also left out of the squad.

While Sadaf Shamas has had limited opportunities in T20 internationals, scoring 61 runs, she has been one of Pakistan’s most consistent performers in ODI cricket. The left-handed batter has accumulated 720 runs in 23 ODIs at an average of 34.28, including one century and five half-centuries.

Her recent form has been particularly impressive. In her last five ODI appearances for Pakistan, Sadaf scored 447 runs, registering four half-centuries and one century.

The 2026 ODI series against Zimbabwe at National Bank Stadium in Karachi further highlighted her batting credentials, as she amassed 289 runs in three matches, including two fifties and a century.

Despite her strong performances and rich run of form, the national women’s selection committee opted not to include Sadaf Shamas in Pakistan’s squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, a decision that has raised questions within cricket circles, particularly as the team’s batting unit continues to face challenges.
