Punjab sets minimum wage at Rs40,000; govt salaries, pensions increased

Finance Minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman announces a 10 percent increase in salaries of government employees and a 5 percent rise in pensions

LAHORE: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-June 16th, 2025) The Punjab government on Monday decided to raise the minimum wage for labourers to Rs40,000 per month as part of its newly unveiled budget for the fiscal year 2025–26, with an overall outlay of Rs5.3 trillion.

Presenting the budget in the Punjab Assembly, Finance Minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman announced a 10 percent increase in the salaries of government employees and a 5 percent rise in pensions. The announcement came during a heated assembly session, where members of the opposition staged a loud protest, surrounding the speaker’s dais and chanting slogans against the government.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz was present in the assembly during the session. Despite the commotion, the finance minister continued his speech, highlighting the government's priorities for development, welfare, and employee relief.

The provincial cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, had earlier approved the budget in a high-level meeting. The cabinet endorsed the proposal to enhance the minimum monthly wage to Rs40,000, alongside increases in public sector pay and pensions.
