MEXICO CITY (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 09th March, 2023) The Nicaraguan government paroled 230 women prisoners, granting them the right to family coexistence, on the occasion of International Women's Day on Wednesday, Minister of Governance Maria Amelia Coronel said.
"We are convinced that each of the inmates, who received this legal right, will know how to take advantage of their freedom, which entails great responsibility and commitment. These are once-in-a-lifetime opportunities that could not be repeated, so they need to understand: they need to become the best version of themselves the moment they are released," the minister said, as quoted by the Canal 4 broadcaster.
One of the released women told journalists that she would devote her life to her work and children and "try not to make bad decisions because she learned to appreciate freedom while in prison."
In 2022, the Nicaraguan government released over 4,500 people from prisons based on the right to family coexistence, according to local media. The family coexistence regime allows former inmates to serve the last part of their sentence while living with their families under the supervision of authorities. The measure, according to the Nicaraguan authorities, allows for the reintegration of convicts into society.
