The European Union reiterates its call for a snap presidential election in Venezuela amid a political crisis in the country, the spokeswoman for EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy said Monday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th February, 2019) The European Union reiterates its call for a snap presidential election in Venezuela amid a political crisis in the country, the spokeswoman for EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy said Monday.

Earlier in the day, Austria, Denmark, Finland France, Germany, Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands recognized Juan Guaido, the leader of Venezuelan National Assembly, as the country's interim president.

"I would simply at this stage reiterate the EU's position ... which is very clear and has been confirmed by all 28 member states ... We call for urgent holding of free, transparent and credible presidential elections," Maja Kocijancic told reporters.

EU countries were expected to recognize Guaido in a joint statement, but, according to a diplomatic source in Brussels, Italy blocked the statement.

Russia, China, and a number of other countries are supporting incumbent Nicolas Maduro as the legitimate president of Venezuela.
