The Central Election Commission of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic (LPR) has delivered accreditations to international election observers ahead of the upcoming vote, commission's head Elena Kravchenko said.
LUHANSK (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 10th November, 2018) The Central Election Commission of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic (LPR) has delivered accreditations to international election observers ahead of the upcoming vote, commission's head Elena Kravchenko said.The elections of the heads and members of the parliaments of the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Luhansk are scheduled for Sunday. The Ukrainian authorities have already stated that they would not recognize the election results. The United States and the European Union have also condemned the vote, arguing that it undermines the commitments taken under the Minsk peace accords, while Russia has said the elections do not contradict the agreements.
"Today, the Central Election Commission has issued accreditation certificates for international observers. They represent 22 countries here," Kravchenko told reporters.
She added that the election commission had registered no violations during the election campaign in the LPR.
The conflict in Donbas started in 2014, when Ukrainian authorities launched a military operation against the self-proclaimed republics that refused to recognize the new government in Kiev, which came to power after what they considered to be a coup.
In February 2015, the warring parties signed the Minsk peace accords to end the hostilities in the region, but the situation has remained tense, with both parties accusing each other of ceasefire violations.
