Trump's Denial Thousands Died in Puerto Rico Shows 'He is Not Fit to Serve' - Lawmaker

President Donald Trump's unwillingness to accept that nearly 3000 people died during Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico reveals he cannot take responsibility and is unfit to lead the United States, US Congressman Bennie Thompson said in a press release on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th September, 2018) President Donald Trump's unwillingness to accept that nearly 3000 people died during Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico reveals he cannot take responsibility and is unfit to lead the United States, US Congressman Bennie Thompson said in a press release on Thursday.

"The fact that the President will not take responsibility for his administration's failures and will not even recognize that thousands have perished shows us, once again, that he is not fit to serve as our President," the release stated.

An independent study conducted by the George Washington University Milken Institute school of Public Health and released in August concluded that Hurricane Maria caused the deaths of 2,975 people in Puerto Rico between September 2017 and February 2018.

Trump tweeted earlier on Thursday that the study was completely erroneous, and said when he visited the island between six and 18 deaths were registered and the toll did not increase after the storm passed.

Thompson stressed the Trump administration was not able to provide the necessary assistance to Puerto Rico and the island survived and recovered because of the strength of its people.

The congressman said Trump is constantly misleading the public and trying to change history.

Trump should resign and allow Congress to launch an investigation into how the White House allowed thousands of Puerto Ricans to die during and in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, Thompson said.
