Putin Says New US Sanctions Against Russia Counterproductive, Senseless

BOCHAROV RUCHEY (Russia) (Pakistan Point news / Sputnik - 23rd August, 2018) Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that he considered the new US sanctions against Russia counterproductive and senseless.

The remarks come as the latest US sanctions against Russia over Moscow's alleged use of a nerve agent in the United Kingdom in March took effect.

"As for the sanctions, these are counterproductive and senseless actions, especially against a country like Russia," Putin told a press conference after talks with Finnish President Sauli Niinisto.

He also expressed hope that Washington would realize the futility of the policy of sanctions, and the two states would go on to normal cooperation.

On August 8, Washington announced the new sanctions against Russia, enacted under the Chemical and Biological Weapons Control and Warfare Elimination Act of 1991, over Moscow's alleged use of a nerve agent in the United Kingdom in March. According to the US State Department, once the sanctions go into effect, Russia will be prevented from obtaining licenses to import security sensitive goods or technologies from the United States.
