Putin Briefed Merkel on Russias Efforts in Helping Syrian Refugees During Talks - Kremlin

Russian President Vladimir Putin informed German Chancellor Angela Merkel about Moscow's humanitarian aid efforts in Syria during their Saturday meeting, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th August, 2018) Russian President Vladimir Putin informed German Chancellor Angela Merkel about Moscow's humanitarian aid efforts in Syria during their Saturday meeting, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday.

When asked during a press conference whether Putin and Merkel had discussed the Syrian crisis during their talks, Peskov said that the two officials had exchanged their opinions on the issue.

"President Putin has repeatedly emphasized the significance of providing humanitarian assistance [to Syria] by various parties. President Putin has spoken about the steps taken by Moscow, and the process of the refugees return to Syria, which is gradually gaining momentum," Peskov said.

Apart from Syria, Putin and Merkel discussed bilateral relations, the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project, the Iran nuclear deal, the Ukrainian conflict, as well as US import tariffs during the negotiations, which took place in Germany.

The forces of Syrian President Bashar Assad have recently recaptured from terrorists vast territories. The authorities are now engaged in dealing with the humanitarian disaster and rebuilding the country with the help of the Russian side.

Due to improving situation in Syria refugees and internally displaced persons started to return to their homes in the country.

The Russian Defense Ministry said earlier in August that over 235,000 Syrians had returned to their crisis-torn country from abroad since September 2015.
