Nawaz Sharif might contest elections from jail: Journalist

Says Kh Asif’s verdict is not going to affect Nawaz Sharif’s narrative

Islamabad (Pakistan Point News – 2nd June, 2018) Renowned journalist and columnist Javed Chaudhry while talking on a tv program has said that the Supreme Court’s verdict in favor of former foreign minister Khawaja Asif has given a relief to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN).

He said that many people predicted that the people supporting Nawaz Sharif will start backing out one by one as the elections approach near. They were of the view that Khawaja Asif and Ahsan Iqbal might not contest elections while Khawaja Saad Rafique was also facing a case and Pervaiz Rasheed was in trouble. That’s why there were apprehensions that these close aides of Nawaz Sharif, who are his strengths, will disappear before elections.

But it would not wrong to say that the PMLN has got a big relief in the form of Khawaja Asif. The PMLN should celebrate this but they should know that there is a big difference between the cases of Nawaz Sharif and Khawaja Asif, the journalist said.

“Both had concealed their Iqama (work permit); however, Asif had shown his salary in the column given in nomination papers. Therefore, there is a technical difference between these cases and Asif was able to get a ruling in his favor because of this difference,” he added.

He said now that elections are near, the verdict in the favor is a good omen for PMLN but this verdict will not have a major affect on Nawaz Sharif’s narrative. Nawaz Sharif will continue with his stance that he has been ousted three times.

Javed Chaudhry further said that the Accountability Court is also going to give a verdict in his case. He can probably face a sentence and contest elections from inside the jail.
