Talks Succeed as Banned Committee Defers Muzaffarabad March Until July 21

The committee agrees to suspend its planned protest after receiving assurances from government representatives that its demands would be addressed through negotiations, say official sources

RAWALAKOT: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-July 16th, 2026) The talks between the government and a banned action committee concluded successfully on athursday, resulting in the postponement of the group’s planned march towards Muzaffarabad until July 21, officials said.

The committee, the sources said, agreed to suspend its planned protest after receiving assurances from government representatives that its demands would be addressed through negotiations.

A representative of the banned committee confirmed the decision, saying the march had been postponed to allow time for the government to fulfil its commitments. He added that if the assurances were not honoured, the group would resume its planned march on July 22.

The agreement came hours after a deadly security incident in Rawalakot involving armed members of the banned Joint Action Committee.

The officials said armed assailants allegedly opened fire near the Matial Mehra Bus Terminal, targeting security personnel and civilians. Police responding to the incident reportedly came under attack while attempting to bring the situation under control.

Pakistan Rangers personnel were later deployed to reinforce the police. During the exchange of fire, one Rangers official was martyred while another sustained injuries, according to authorities.

The officials have not yet disclosed further details regarding the security operation or whether any suspects have been taken into custody.

The successful dialogue has, for the time being, eased tensions in the area. However, security agencies remain on alert and continue to monitor the situation closely ahead of the committee’s revised deadline.
