Police arrest alleged mastermind, facilitation network behind Karachi Rangers Camp attack

SSP Irfan Bahadur says the authorities have also arrested suspected smugglers accused of supplying weapons to the attackers

KARACHI: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-July 14th, 2026) Sindh Police on Tuesday announced the arrest of the alleged mastermind and the entire facilitation network behind the June 27 attack on a Rangers camp in Karachi, claiming the assault was planned from Afghanistan.

Speaking at a joint press conference at the Central Police Office, Sindh Home Minister Zia Lanjar along with police and CTD officials said the alleged mastermind, identified as Qari Bashir (also referred to as Muhammad Bashir), had been taken into custody along with several facilitators linked to the attack.

According to SSP Irfan Bahadur, authorities have also arrested suspected smugglers accused of supplying weapons to the attackers, while investigators have uncovered what they described as the group’s support network operating in both Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Police said the attack began when a suicide bomber identified as Janan detonated explosives at the entrance of the Rangers camp in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, allowing three other attackers to enter the premises. Officials claimed one of the attackers was from Bajaur while the remaining three were Afghan nationals, alleging they had received training, weapons and explosives in Afghanistan.

The CTD said the attackers were allegedly directed by handlers operating from Afghan territory. Investigators also claimed to have recovered videos showing arrested facilitators receiving training and recording statements at camps allegedly run by Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, which officials described as an India-backed proxy group.

According to the CTD, an injured suspect identified as Usman admitted during interrogation to receiving training at multiple camps. Investigators alleged that the four attackers travelled from Afghanistan to Karachi and were transported from Hub to Korangi, where they stayed at a safe house before carrying out the assault.

The officials further claimed that some of the arrested facilitators had links with individuals in India.
