PM Shehbaz, Field Marshal Munir arrive in Tehran to attend Khamenei funeral

TEHRAN: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-July 3rd, 2026) Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir arrived in Tehran on Friday to attend the funeral ceremonies of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was assassinated in a US-Israeli strike on February 28.

Upon arrival, the Pakistani delegation was received by senior Iranian officials. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who had reached Tehran earlier, was also present to receive Field Marshal Asim Munir.

According to the Prime Minister's Office, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is accompanied by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, PPP Secretary General Nayyer Bukhari, and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.

During the visit, Prime Minister Shehbaz is expected to convey Pakistan's condolences to the Iranian leadership and the bereaved families. He will also reiterate Pakistan's solidarity with the people of Iran during the period of national mourning.

After concluding his engagements in Iran, the prime minister is scheduled to travel to Turkiye.

Earlier in the day, Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani also arrived in Tehran with a high-level delegation to participate in the funeral prayers and burial ceremonies. The delegation was welcomed by Iranian officials upon arrival.

Representatives from several countries, including China, Afghanistan and Iran's neighbouring Caucasus states, are also attending the funeral ceremonies.

The funeral programme is expected to move through several significant locations, beginning in Tehran before continuing to the holy cities of Qom, Karbala, Najaf and concluding in Mashhad, reflecting the religious and political significance of the late leader.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said a large public turnout at the funeral would demonstrate national unity and send a strong message against terrorism, violence and intimidation.
