US officials say surveillance of drone activity has been intensified since the start of the competition to ensure the safety of players, spectators and event staff
WASHINGTON: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-June 24th, 2026) US security agencies have seized more than 300 unauthorized drones operating near stadiums and fan zones during the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026, officials said, as authorities continue to enforce strict security measures throughout the tournament.
The US officials said that the surveillance of drone activity has been intensified since the start of the competition to ensure the safety of players, spectators and event staff.
Under temporary flight restrictions in place on match days, all aerial activity, including drone operations, is prohibited within a three-mile radius of World Cup venues and up to an altitude of 3,000 feet. Similar restrictions apply to official fan zones hosting large crowds.
Authorities said the measures are aimed at preventing security breaches and addressing potential threats at one of the world's largest sporting events.
Specialized teams from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have been deployed around stadiums and key event locations. These units are equipped with systems capable of detecting, tracking and neutralizing drones that enter restricted airspace.
Officials warned that drone operators who violate the restrictions could face penalties of up to $100,000, confiscation of their equipment and possible criminal prosecution.
Security concerns intensified last week after an unregistered drone was intercepted near the training facility of South Korea's national football team in Mexico. The incident raised concerns about unauthorized surveillance and highlighted the challenges of securing major international sporting events.
Authorities said the seizure of hundreds of drones demonstrates the scale of enforcement efforts being undertaken to protect World Cup venues and ensure the tournament proceeds without disruption.
