Zidane Iqbal becomes first Pakistan-heritage player to feature in men’s World Cup

Iqbal came on as a substitute in the 59th minute for Iraq during their Group I clash against Norway at the stadium in Foxborough, Boston

BOSTON:(UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-June 17th, 2026) Footballer Zidane Iqbal has made history at the FIFA World Cup 2026, becoming the first player of Pakistani heritage to appear in a men’s World Cup match.

Iqbal came on as a substitute in the 59th minute for Iraq during their Group I clash against Norway at the stadium in Foxborough, Boston. The match ended in a 4–1 defeat for Iraq, with Norway forward Erling Haaland scoring twice on his World Cup debut.

Born to a Pakistani father and Iraqi mother, Iqbal’s appearance marked a significant milestone for his family background as well as his international football career.

Speaking to BBC Sport, the former Manchester United midfielder said he was initially unaware of the historic significance of his achievement until it was brought to his attention. He said he immediately shared the news with his father, whom he credited as a key influence in his development as a professional footballer.

Iqbal said he did not consider such a milestone while attempting to qualify for the World Cup with Iraq, adding that the moment came as a surprise.

He expressed deep respect for both sides of his heritage, noting that his father was born in Pakistan and that his family has strong roots there. He said his grandfather belonged to the first generation of the family settled in Pakistan, which further strengthened his emotional connection to the country.

The midfielder also revealed that he honours both national identities on the field by displaying flags on his boots. He said he wears the Iraqi flag on one side and the Pakistani flag on the other as a tribute to both parts of his family.

Iqbal added that he does not prioritise one identity over the other, stating that he feels equally connected to both Iraq and Pakistan and carries pride in both backgrounds while representing his national team.
