BNP secures two-thirds majority in Bangladesh parliamentary elections

Official results show that BNP won 212 seats out of the 299 constituencies where polling was held, giving the party a commanding lead in the 300-member House of the Nation (Jatiya Sangsad)

DHAKA: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-Feb 13rd, 2026) Bangladesh’s Election Commission on Friday announced the official results of the country’s parliamentary elections, confirming a landslide victory for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, which secured a two-thirds majority in the National Parliament.

The official results showed that BNP won 212 seats out of the 299 Constituencies where polling was held, giving the party a commanding lead in the 300-member House of the Nation (Jatiya Sangsad). Jamaat-e-Islami emerged as the second-largest party after winning 77 seats.

Despite the decisive outcome, BNP’s prime ministerial candidate Tarique Rahman—son of former prime minister Khaleda Zia—has not yet issued a formal response to the election results. However, the party leadership has appealed to supporters to offer prayers of gratitude instead of holding victory celebrations.

The National Citizen Party (NCP), which played a notable role in the movement that led to the fall of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed’s government, managed to secure only five seats out of the 30 it contested.

Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami has accused the Election Commission of bias in several constituencies and warned of possible protests. Party leaders said they remain committed to constructive politics focused on national development rather than political confrontation.

It may be noted that elections were conducted in 299 constituencies, while polling in one seat was postponed following the death of a Jamaat-e-Islami candidate.

The election outcome is expected to significantly shape Bangladesh’s political landscape and governance in the coming years.
